Music

This term in lower grades we have been studying reading music and listening to other culture’s music and learning a little about these cultures. The students really seem to enjoy listening to other culture’s music and we make reading music like a game. Some of the cultures we listen to are some of the student’s family’s cultures. Rhythm reading is learning how to read the music’s rhythm. We learn to read quavers, crotchets, minims, semibreves and crotchet rests. We treat it as a game and most students seem enjoying reading music.

The middle grades have been focusing on more advanced music theory from their music books. We have also been learning about different instruments too.

The upper grades (5-6) we have been focusing on playing chords on the keyboards. It has been quite challenging for them but these four chords we are learning are used together in hundreds of songs. I have also encouraged students how they can create their own music with these chords, (see below).

Games

Almost all the students have the opportunity to play music games providing they have worked hard and shown good behaviour. I encourage the students to play these games but in respect for cultural differences the game component is not compulsory but most students seem to look forward to these drama and musical games and enjoy them.

Music club (Thursdays)

All music clubs are run at lunchtime for the first half of lunch. This gives the students an opportunity to go to prayer if they wish to.

The primary music club (Thursdays) is almost always full and although it gets noisy, the students seem to really enjoy playing the instruments.

Choir (Wednesdays)

We have an open room for those who would like to try out the choir. This is the ideal time to come to see if the students enjoy choir. For the moment it is open to any primary student from grade 4 to 6. After a while we will make the choir only open to members who really want to commit to performing in September for the concert.

Secondary music club (Fridays)

The secondary music club is only for a select few girls and boys who really want to learn how to play an instrument, it is not for socialising. Already after only one week I see students learning guitar, drums, piano and even a saxophone. Only a limited amount of students can come to this club.

I see that more students are getting guitars. I would like to remind the parents that I have been a guitar tutor for over 30 years so if you would like to talk we me about the instrument or just tune it for you, please come and see me, Mr Webb (music teacher).

Music to try at home.

Many people who don’t have a piano or keyboard use an application on their IPad. These chords work very well together and are used together in hundreds of songs.

The chords can also be used to create your own music. Just hold the three notes (the black dots). Once you have the fingers down properly you can move you wrist to change the chords without moving your fingers. You can press them down with any rhythm, just think of a word say “Sirius” Sir-i-us and press down for each syllable and the rhythm would look like this.

Girls’ Pastoral Care

Boys’ Pastoral Care

Camp

On the fourth of April, the year 9&10 boys departed on a trip to a magnificent beach house situated in McRae. When we arrived, our supervisors (Mr Selek and Mr Kabak) prepared a program. This program consisted of reading self-reflection, discussions and of course lots of fun. We did many things such as swimming, watching movies and going on late night trips to Woolworths. My favourite activity however, was the bike ride on Fort Nepean. Even though I almost fell multiple times due to the steep hills and the not so well built tracks, I really enjoyed being around my friends and the majestic view at the ocean. Overall, our teachers did an amazing job in accommodating and entertaining the year 9&10 boys. I had so much fun and I’m certain that everyone who came enjoyed their time just as much as I did. (Mustafa Alsharbati Year 9)

Me and my classmates participated on a camp in our 1st term holidays, it was a really fun, educational and interesting camp. It was my first time experiencing a camp like this. We got to read, swim and see some amazing landmarks and besides that I got to spend time with my classmates and got to know them better. Overall, the camp was an unforgettable experience. Me and my friends really enjoyed the camp. (Rashed Saleh Year 10)

It was a great camp for me. It was the first camp since I have been in Australia. So, it was very interesting for me. I had more fun times with my friends and my teachers. We had some delicious food which prepared and cooked by our teachers. I really liked the bike riding; I enjoyed the fresh air in there and it was very good for exercise. I loved the camp. (Harry Nguyen Year 10)

Year 10 Pastoral Care Boys

It was the 28th of April, we had our routine Saturday classes in the morning to enhance our knowledge and get a firm grasp of Quadratics. It was very helpful for the year 10 boys and special thanks goes to Mr Kabak for sparing some of his time for the betterment of mine and the other boys. Once we had concluded our Saturday class, we had made our way to Fountain Gate Village Cinemas to watch the New Avengers: Infinity War. It was a great movie and was action packed and entertaining. It was coming to sunset when we had finished the movie and everyone was starving for some kebabs. So we had made our way to Yelken Kebabs to have dinner and the HSPs were one of the best we had. We all had a good day and was a good balance of fun and learning with friends. Areeq Khondkar

Little Bad Wolf Iftar & Bubble Soccer

MY FRIDAY NIGHT

My Friday night, was amazing! We had HSP at Little Bad Wolf, many people were there and we had a great time. We had free tea and biscuits. Later, we played bubble soccer with yr 9 boys. It was very tiring but fun. We versed year 9s and we won because we were too good for year 9s. I scored a goal because I am too good for them.
